Trusted. Local.
The Legal Requirement for Fire Safety Signage
Fire safety signage is not optional — it is a legal requirement for most non-domestic premises under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996.
Who It Applies To
All non-domestic premises must display appropriate fire safety signage — including offices, retail premises, warehouses, schools, care homes, HMOs, and any premises where members of the public are present.
What Must Be Displayed
At minimum, all premises must display fire exit signs on all escape routes, fire action notices at alarm call points, fire extinguisher identification signs, and assembly point signs at the designated meeting point.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
Failure to display adequate fire safety signage can result in enforcement notices from the Fire and Rescue Authority, prosecution under the RRO 2005, and invalidated insurance cover.
What is ISO 7010?
ISO 7010 is the international standard for safety signs — defining the symbols used on fire exit signs, fire action notices, and other safety signage across the world. In the UK, fire safety signage must comply with the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, which incorporates ISO 7010 symbols.
-

Standardised Symbols
ISO 7010 symbols are designed to be universally understood regardless of language — critical for workplaces with multilingual staff, public-facing premises, and buildings visited by international guests.
-

Consistent Across the UK & Europe
ISO 7010 compliance ensures your signage meets the same standard as fire safety signs used across the UK and European Union — important for businesses operating across multiple countries or sites.
-

Mandatory for New Installations
All new fire safety signage installations in the UK must use ISO 7010-compliant symbols. Non-compliant signage — including older text-only signs — should be replaced when premises are refurbished or when a fire risk assessment identifies the need.
Fire Safety Sign Placement Guidance
Displaying the correct signs is only half the requirement — they must also be positioned correctly to be legally compliant and practically effective. Here are the key placement rules:
-

Fire Exit Signs
Must be displayed above or adjacent to every escape route door and at every change of direction along an escape route. Signs must be visible from any point along the escape route — if a sign is not clearly visible, an additional sign must be added. Minimum luminance requirements apply for illuminated signs.
-

Fire Action Notices
Must be displayed at every fire alarm call point — the small red break-glass boxes mounted on walls throughout your premises. The notice tells occupants what to do when the alarm sounds. One notice per call point is the minimum requirement.
-

Fire Door Signs
All fire doors must be marked with the appropriate sign — either "Fire Door Keep Shut" for doors that must remain closed, or "Fire Door Keep Clear" for doors on escape routes that must not be obstructed. Signs must be displayed on both sides of the door.
-

Assembly Point Signs
Must be displayed at the designated assembly point — the location where all occupants gather following an evacuation. The sign must be visible from the building exit and from the assembly point itself.

Yes. Landlords must ensure that tenants can safely evacuate during a fire. In HMOs or buildings with shared spaces, clear fire exit signs and door signage are typically required.
-
Mandatory signs include fire exit signs, fire door instructions, fire extinguisher locations, and fire action notices. The exact requirements depend on your layout and fire risk assessment.
-
A fire extinguisher sign should be positioned clearly above or adjacent to the extinguisher, helping people quickly identify its type and use in an emergency.
-
Not usually, but in some cases (e.g. converted properties, HMOs, or homes with vulnerable residents), signage can be recommended as part of a fire risk assessment.
